CoopWorks project – this project is funded by Agriterra to pilot the development of a computer system for recording all the activities that are performed in the office.  This will make it easier to keep records and production of reports will be done instantly.

The selected cooperative societies to pilot the work are Kikima Farmers Cooperative Society in Mbooni where there is an early crop and Kamacharia Farmers Cooperative Society in Muranga (Mugama Union) where there is a late crop.

This project will be implemented with partners such as the Ministry of Agriculture (Coffee Desk), Ministry of Cooperative Development and Marketing, the Coffee Board, KENFAP, FAO, representatives from the cooperative societies, etc.

Future Plans

Climate change project proposal – this proposal was written jointly with the Coffee Research Foundation, the Coffee Board, KCGA and the Kenya Forestry Services.  The main objective is to plant trees among coffee bushes to mitigate the effects of global warming.  It was forwarded to the Matching Grant Fund and its funding is expected any time.

KCPA is forging a partnership with GTZ to pilot the production of Biogas from coffee pulp.  The pilot will extend to include the management of waste water from the coffee fermentation tanks, which can also be channeled to produce biogas as well. A COD (chemical oxygen demand) test will help determine the number of organic pollutants in that water and the action that can be taken to correct the same.

The Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) is an organization chaired by Mr. Kofi Annan, the former UN Secretary General and has its head office in Nairobi. This organization is working to improve the productivity of African soil and, as KCPA is an interested party, it is reaching out to the organization to establish some from of collaboration in mitigation of the negative effects of global warming and climate change.
